walking beam

A beam with each end attached to the axles of a tandem-axle arrangement and its center attached to the frame directly or through a spring system. The beam reduces the impact of road bumps to the frame by 50% and equalizes the load carried by each of the axles. Also called an equalizing beam.


water fade

A type of brake fade that occurs when water gets between the friction surfaces and the drum that acts as a lubricant and reduces braking efficiency.


water wicking

The movement of water through wiring due to its adhesive and cohesive properties.


waterfall arrangement

Two or more universal joint arrangements where the joint angles form parallel lines; a method of angle cancellation for use with parallel angles. Also called parallel joint arrangement.


Watt’s law

An electrical law that defines the relationship between power, amperage, and voltage.


wave inverter

A device that changes the shape of electrical current waves.


Weather-Pack connector

An environmentally sealed push-to-seat electrical connection system supplied in one- to six-pin configurations.


web

The upright portion of the frame rail. Also called frame rail web.


wedge brakes

Brakes that use a wedge pushed between two rollers as a lever to apply the brakes.


welding helmet

A helmet that protects your eyes and your face from the UV radiation and flying sparks or particles during arc welding operations.
