W-type engine

An engine configuration consisting of two VR cylinder banks in a deep V arrangement.


wad punches

A punch that is hollow for cutting circular shapes in soft materials such as gaskets.


walking

When the planet carrier is rotating while the planet gears are moving between the sun and the ring gear. This is because either the sun gear or the ring gear is being held stationary.


warding file

A thin, flat file with a tapered end.


warm-up cycle

When the engine is started and run until the engine operating temperature reaches 160° F (71.1° C), has increased in temperature at least 40° F (22.2° C), and the engine is turned off again.


warpage

A change in the shape of a surface due to distortion or wear.


waste cylinder

The cylinder in a waste spark ignition system that receives a spark near the top of its exhaust stroke.


waste spark ignition system

An ignition system in which each ignition coil served two cylinders, with each end of the secondary winding attached by a high-tension lead to a spark plug. The spark is used to ignite the air-fuel mixture in one cylinder and has no effect on the other cylinder.


waste vegetable oil (WVO)

Used cooking grease or oil used for producing biodiesel fuel.


wastegate

A pressure regulator device that allows control of the pressure produced by the turbocharger. It opens to allow exhaust gases to bypass the turbine wheel of the turbocharger.
