V

v blocks

Metal blocks with a V-shaped cutout for holding shafts while working on them; also referred to as vee blocks.

v-type engine

An engine configuration that has two banks of cylinders sitting side by side in a V arrangement and sharing a common crankshaft.

vacuum

A pressure in an enclosed area that is lower than atmospheric pressure.

vacuum bleeding

A bleeding process that uses a vacuum bleeder to pull the air and old brake fluid from the system.

vacuum gauge

A device used to measure the amount of vacuum (pressures below atmospheric pressure) an engine can generate during various operating conditions.

vacuum modulator

A device on a hydraulically controlled transmission that converts engine manifold vacuum into an engine load signal called modulator pressure.

vacuum pumps

A device used to evacuate the air-conditioning system and put it into a deep vacuum or low pressure to remove moisture.

vacuum servos

Air-conditioning door actuators controlled by a vacuum.

vacuum tube fluorescent (VTF)

A type of lighting used for instrumentation displays on vehicle instrument panel clusters. This type of lighting emits a very bright light with high contrast and can display in various colors; also called vacuum fluorescent display (VFD).

vacuum vent valve

An electromechanical valve in the evaporative emissions system that prevents a low-pressure condition from occurring. It also ensures that the fuel tank will not collapse due to fuel usage or contraction of fuel on cooldown.
