S-cam

A camshaft used to force brake shoes against the brake drum.


SAE J-560 standard

The SAE standards for the configuration of trailer electrical cables and plugs.


SAE J1128 standard

A standard that specifies the dimensions, test methods, and requirements for single-core primary wire intended for use in road vehicle applications.


safe working load (SWL)

The maximum safe lifting load for lifting equipment.


safety interlock

A safety feature commonly used by electrically operated devices that prevents unsafe operation by locking out its operation unless a set of safe operating conditions are met.


safety relief valve

A pressure relief valve located in the service-supply or wet tank; used to prevent tank rupture from over-pressurization. The valve typically opens at pressures above 150 psi (1,034 kPa).


sag

A type of frame damage characterized by the downward bending of the frame rail between two support points. The opposite of bow.


scheduled lock-up

Torque converter lock-up that occurs at a preset point; this saves fuel.


schematic diagram

A line drawing that explains how a system works by using symbols and connecting lines.


screw

An externally threaded fastener that turns into a hole that may or may not be threaded.
