R

rack-and-pinion gear

A gear consisting of a flat rack with either spur or helically cut teeth on one side and a meshing circular pinion gear.

rack-and-pinion steering system

A type of steering gear arrangement that uses two gears. A smaller round pinion gear located at the end of the steering shaft connects to a linear gear, called the rack. The pinion gear moves the rack from side-to-side as the pinion rotates. The side-to-side motion of the rack controls the direction of the steer tires.

radial thrust

Thrust that tries to push gears in mesh apart perpendicular to their axis.

radial-belted tire

A tire construction with belts placed at 90 degrees to the tire centerline, wrapped from side to side around the tire beads.

radial-ply tire

A tire with two or more layers of casing plies and cord loops running radially from bead to bead.

radiant heat transfer

The transfer of heat through a medium, such as a gas or vacuum, which does not cause the medium itself to heat.

ramp-off rate

The specific reduction in clutch apply pressure for the clutch that is being released during a shift in the World Transmission.

range gear

Any speed gear; in Eaton transmissions, it refers to the low-range gear in the auxiliary section.

range shift cylinder

The shift cylinder to control range shifts in the auxiliary.

range verification tests

Tests constantly being performed by the Allison World Transmission control system whenever there is no shift in progress; the test compares turbine times the gear ratio to the output speed to ensure the transmission is not slipping.
