An early SAE network communication protocol with a data transmission at 9600 bits per second.


J-1939

A Newer SAE network communication protocol; data transmission at a rate of at least 250,000 bits per second and up to 500,000 bits/second.


J-560 trailer connector

An SAE standards for an electrical trailer cord plug and receptacle located at the rear of the tractor.


Jack bolt

A bolt that forces the pressure plate forward and secures the clutch discs in a DM clutch.


jack shaft

A short shaft usually at the front of a driveline. Also known as a coupling shaft.


jack stands

Metal stands with adjustable height to hold a vehicle once it has been jacked up.


jackknife

 A condition when the drive axles of a vehicle push the rear of a vehicle around its center point and steering control is lost. Generally caused by aggressive over braking or lockup of the trailer wheels, which folds the orientation of the combination vehicle into a shape of a pocket-knife. Also called fishtailing.


jounce

The upward motion of the wheels and axles in reaction to road bumps or terrain.


jounce block

A rubber (usually) bumper that stops the axle from contacting the vehicle frame during severe suspension articulation. Also called axle stop.


jump out

The condition in which a transmission jumps out of gear and to neutral when under load, caused by worn components, such as sliding clutches and shift forks. Also called gear slip out.
