I

I-beam

I-shaped beam used for frame rails on heavier vehicles; can be aluminum or steel.


I-Shift

The Volvo AMT; Mack trucks use the same transmission.


idle validation switch (IVS)

A throttle input circuit used for safety reasons to verify throttle position.


idler gear

Gear used in transmissions to drive a vehicle backward.


impeller

The bladed element in a torque converter or fluid coupling that is fixed to the housing and, therefore, rotates with it.


incandescent bulb

A conventional bulb that electrically heats a filament of metal to the temperature at which it produces light.


inclinometer/accelerometer

Sensors included in the transmission control system that allow it to adapt to topography and operating conditions.


included angle

The angle of camber added or subtracted to the king pin inclination angle.


indirect TPMS

A type of automated tire pressure monitoring system that uses the anti-lock braking system of a vehicle to measure the difference in the rotational speed of the four wheels to determine tire pressure.


induction motor

An asynchronous-type AC electric motor where alternating current in the stator induces magnetic fields in the rotor.
