H

H-bridge

A control circuit taking its name from the shape of four transistors arranged to switch the polarity current applied to a load. It is often used to change the direction of DC electric motors or rapidly open and close injector solenoids.

hairline fracture

A cracked bone that has not separated.

hall-effect sensor

A sensor commonly used to measure the rotational speed of a shaft; it has the advantage of producing a digital signal square waveform and has strong signal strength at low shaft rotational speeds.

halogen bulb

An incadescent light bulb that adds small quantities of gases from the halogen family, such as iodine or bromine.

halogen infrared discharge (HID) bulb

A light bulb that has a special coating on an inside portion of the bulb wall that reflects infrared heat back onto the filament, causing it to burn hotter.

hanger bearing

A bearing pressed on to a machined surface after the splined area of a driveshaft’s slip yoke spline; used to support a multiple piece driveshaft. Also called a center bearing

hardening

A manufacturing process that makes the surface of a gear much harder than its core: typically, the surface is hardened to a depth of not more than 0.050" (1.2 mm).

harmonic vibration

An inherent vibration that occurs at precisely 50% of a shaft’s critical speed.

hazard

Something that can cause an accident, a sickness, or an injury.

hazardous environment

A place where hazards exist.
