half shafts

Axles that have constant-velocity joints on each end and that fit between the transaxle and the wheel. Typically, one is used on each side of a vehicle.


hall-effect sensor

A sensor commonly used to measure the rotational speed of a shaft. It has the advantage of producing a digital signal square waveform and has strong signal strength at low shaft rotational speeds.


halogen lamp

A type of incandescent lamp that is filled with a halogen gas such as bromine or iodine.


hard rubber mallet

A special-purpose tool with a head made of hard rubber; often used for moving things into place where it is important not to damage the item being moved.


hard shifting

A shifting problem in which the shifter will not move smoothly into the desired gear, requiring excessive force by the driver to set it into gear.


hard steering

When it is difficult for the driver to turn the steering wheel. There may be a problem in the power steering system, too much positive caster, or binding in the steering system.


hardened seat

A valve seat that has undergone a heat-treating process to become more robust and capable of withstanding the severe demands of today’s vehicles and drivers.


harmonic balancer

A round metal disc connected to the front of the crankshaft. It smooths out torsional vibrations created by the crankshaft.


hatchback

A vehicle that has a shared passenger and cargo area; it typically is available in three- and five-door arrangements.


hazard

Anything that could hurt you or someone else.
