fail-safe operation

The minimal transmission function that occurs when electrical power is lost.


false brinelling

A condition where lubricant is squeezed out from between the needles and the trunnions of a U-joint leading to frettage wear; caused by too small or no angle at the joint so lubricant is not distributed.


fast adaptive

A type of adaptive control used when the transmission is new and makes large changes to bring the shift close to the optimal shift profile quickly.


fatigue failure

Failure of components due to repeated overload.


fault code state change

A diagnostic technique where the opposite fault code is introduced than the reported one to differentiate problems in sensors, harnesses, and ECUs.


fault healing

The specific strategy used by an MPC system to compensate for a fault in a fault tolerant system.


fault-tolerant systems

A feature of a control system enabling it to accommodate a fault without significantly affecting its operation.

Laws that limit the weight-to-length ratio of heavy trucks with the goal of protecting roads and bridges from the damage caused by the concentrated weight of shorter trucks. Also known as Bridge Formula B or Federal Bridge Formula.
