B

B-train

A combination vehicle in which the tractor pulls a semi-trailer and a third, full trailer behind the semi-trailer.


B-type lock

A fifth wheel locking mechanism that uses two swinging jaws and a yoke to lock the jaws securely around the king pin.


back-taper

The tapered profile of the teeth on a sliding clutch such that the outer edge is thicker than the inner; the profile helps keep the clutch engaged under load.


backing plate

A metal plate covering the inboard side of brake foundation components in the wheel end.


backlash

The clearance between teeth in mesh with each other.


balancers

A device designed to adjust battery voltage to compensate for unequal charges in multiple batteries. Also called battery equalizers.


ball hitch

A single-point connection configuration for a hitch that uses a tongue-shaped draw bar, which loops over a ball connected to the tow vehicle.


ball-nut rack

A metal block with a threaded hole that is part of the recirculating-ball steering system.


banjo

A drive axle housing with a removable carrier. Also called a removable carrier type.


battery equalizers

A device designed to adjust battery voltage to compensate for unequal charges in multiple batteries. Also called balancers.
