A

A device designed to measure the amount of vacuum very precisely.

A device to quiet the pipes of the A/C system with baffles placed inside to deaden the sound of refrigerant moving.


A-, B-, or C-train

A three-unit combination of tractor plus two trailers.


A-train

A combination vehicle in which the second trailer is a full trailer unit connected by a draw bar to a single hitch point on the lead (first) trailer.


A-type lock

A single swinging lock jaw and plunger for simple operation.


Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) battery

A battery in which electrolyte is absorbed in a fine glass mat that prevents the solution from sloshing or separating into layers of heavier acid and water.


abuse failure

Failure directly attributed to driver or other person’s actions operating a component, system or vehicle outside normal operating range.


AC ripple

A pattern produced by DC voltage fluctuations from the alternator that creates differences between the peak voltage and the minimum voltages of overlapping AC sine waves.


AC-to-DC inverter

A device that switches the polarity of an AC signal to resemble the straight wave polarity of DC.


accumulator

A device placed between the evaporator and the compressor to collect liquid refrigerant and prevent it from entering the compressor. See also hydraulic accumulator.


Ackermann angle

The angle the steering arms make with the vehicle center line. The angle should project towards the center of the rear axle. Also called toe-out on turns.
